Southwest Richmond


To the Southwest of Richmond are the counties of Amelia, Colonial Heights, Dinwiddie, and Petersburg. The County of Amelia is 35 miles southwest of Richmond. Agriculture is king in Amelia as over 90% of its land is dedicated farm and woodland. An easygoing community with a love of the outdoors, there are plenty of festivals and recreational activities throughout the year in Amelia. There are three public schools in Amelia. 20 miles south of Richmond and just outside of Petersburg is Colonial Heights, home to approximately 17,000 residents. Just west of I-85, Dinwiddie is a small county very close to Petersburg. Amazon.com has recently announced plans to invest $50 million into Dinwiddie and create 350 jobs there. Dinwiddie’s Department of Parks & Recreation offers opportunities to learn sports, music, dance and more. The city of Petersburg is a wonder, combining history and contemporary life in exciting ways. Along the Appomattox River, Old Towne Petersburg is a shopping district with great restaurants and music venues. Petersburg, with a population over 32,000, is also home to Virginia State University.
